Când dorești să relatezi o conversație sau cuvintele și gândurile unei alte persoane, în limba engleză folosim așa numitul Reported Speech sau Indirect Speech = Vorbirea Indirectă. Ceea ce înseamnă că transformăm vorbirea directă (Direct Speech), care de regulă este exprimată în I-a persona singular sau plural (eu, al meu, noi, nouă etc.), în vorbire indirectă, care este relatată în a III-a persona singular sau plural (el, ea, ei, al lor etc.).
Speech Reported
Pentru a folosi Reported Speech trebuie urmate câteva reguli:
- Se folosesc verbele introductive.
Cele mai uzuale sunt: said, told, asked, etc. .
Sunt mai multe verbe introductive care se mai numesc Reported verbs (suggested, wondered, admitted, etc.), dar asta e o altă temă de discuție.
- Se schimbă pronumele personale (eu, tu, el etc.), adjectivele posesive (al meu, al tău, al lui etc.) sau se menționează numele persoanei cuvintele căruia dorim să le raportăm.
